Position Summary
The Marine Electrician is responsible for the installation, programming, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical and electronic systems aboard yachts and other vessels. This role requires advanced technical expertise in power distribution, electronics, and marine electrical systems, as well as familiarity with classification standards for compliance. The Marine Electrician must be able to work independently, produce accurate documentation, and collaborate with other technicians and departments to deliver high-quality service.
Key Responsibilities
- Wire and connect electrical components such as electronics, motors, pumps, and switches.
- Program MDF (Main Distribution Frames) and configure yacht electrical distribution systems.
- Install and diagnose yacht electronic systems, including navigation, communication, and monitoring equipment.
- Install and troubleshoot transfer switch equipment, transformers, and ship power systems.
- Work with both U.S. and international power frequencies to ensure safe and proper operation of vessel systems.
- Perform AC and DC power installations, including distribution and control systems.
- Design and execute cable layouts, including routing and terminations.
- Assemble and install cable assemblies, especially for larger commercial or military vessels.
- Conduct corrosion and lightning damage inspections, with documentation and reporting.
- Prepare accurate technical reports and field documentation related to inspections, repairs, and installations.
- Troubleshoot and repair a wide range of yacht electrical and electronic systems.
- Read and interpret wiring specifications and diagrams to complete installations and repairs.
- Cooperate with other technicians and departments to accomplish project goals.
- Clean tools, maintain equipment, and keep work areas organized.
- Ensure all work meets quality, safety, regulatory, and classification society (ABS, Lloyd’s, etc.) standards.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience working on high-end yachts as a marine electrician; experience with commercial or military vessels preferred. Will consider candidates with Industrial electrical willing to apprentice in the Marine Industry.
- Strong knowledge of yacht electrical systems, power distribution, and electronics.
- Experience programming MDF and commissioning distribution systems.
- Familiarity with installation and diagnostics of yacht electronic systems (navigation, communication, monitoring).
- Ability to install and diagnose transfer switches, transformers, and all ship-related power equipment.
- Knowledge of U.S. and international power frequencies and compatibility requirements.
- Experience performing AC/DC power installations, cable layouts, and cable assemblies.
- Familiarity with corrosion/lighting inspections and technical reporting.
- Understanding of marine classification standards (ABS, Lloyd’s, RINA, etc.) for compliance work.
- Experience using electrical testing equipment and tools.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- ABYC Certification required (or ability to obtain within defined timeframe).
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining a high level of quality and attention to detail.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and documentation skills.
